APPA NEWS ARTS EDITORIAL - “The Duchess”, a new movie to mark its debut in cinemas across the UK the 5th of September, is already set to become a success and a classic of British Cinema.
Starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, the movie portrays the life of Lady Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, in a lose analogy with Diana, Princess of Wales, a direct descendent of Georgiana, suggesting that History appears to repeat itself.
Indeed, like Diana; Georgiana, the most glamorous young woman of her time in elegant and sophisticated Georgian England, later became entangled in a complicated affair, much of it the consequence of her condition as a woman in a social class focused society. Georgiana rebelled, cracking down on social convention and prejudice, jumping from a “cooled” marriage with the Duke, to an affair with Bess Foster and later with Charles Grey, a future Prime Minister.
Astonishing photography, settings and historically acurate costumes, the movie undoubtedly pays tribute to British historical drama quality, to which contribute the excellent acting of Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes in the leading roles.
Based upon a true story, the film now released to cinemas is a strong candidate for an Oscar nomination in the next Holywood Academy Awards, due next year.
